Teotihuacan

mexico_city-14

Teotihuacan is a vast Mexican archaeological complex northeast of Mexico City. Running down the middle of the site, which was once a flourishing pre-Columbian city, is the Avenue of the Dead. It links the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, the Pyramid of the Moon and the Pyramid of the Sun, the latter two with panoramic views from their summits. The city is thought to have been established around 100 BC. The steak was from Argentina, one of the most delicious things I’ve ever eaten.

Mexico City

We wasted no time in getting back to Mexico City, and didn’t sleep until our heads hit the pillow of an Air B&B in the city, 6 hours trek or so from our Orizaba. We spent a day spent drinking lattes and beer, walking the beautiful city listening to the echo of Harmonipan players on the street, and seeing the creepy and ornate Catholic castles.

Pico de Orizaba, summit day

mexico_pico_de_orizaba_citlaltepetl-51

At the wee hour of 11:30PM, we wake up to climb the mountain for the sunrise. We link up with a Peruvian and get to it. Some easy climbing until the altitude takes its toll beyond 16,000 feet, after frequent breaks I am successful and see one of the most epic sunrises of my life complete with the setting moon near the top of the peaks shadow.

Gear laid out for the trip, more stuff because it’s higher and colder. Excited to use a few new pieces of equipment.

We stayed at the Joaquin Canchola Hostel, found at SummitOrizaba.com, they served us some great home style Mexican dinners.

We walked around town, and picked up some Dex just in case we had issues with high altitude sickness.

This man kept telling me, “no chingale.” I thought he was telling me not to worry, we later found out he was telling me to not fuck my hiking buddies.

The base camp house, at 13k feet or so, we’ll sleep here to acclimate and I struck out on my own to get some mileage under my feet for the next days trek.
