Wai’anae Kai forest reserve with the HTMC

Plans changed last minute for our 10 hour trek so we joined up with the Hawaii Trail and Mountain Club for a hike through the Wai’anae forest reserve.  Quickly into the hike I realized I had been here and was in fact lost in an attempt to find the Mount Ka’ala trail about a year ago.

Waiting for my carpool buddies, the sun was just breaking through the cloudy horizon, on the way to the West side it became pretty epic.

Met Wai’nae Steve, a man who is quite renown in the hiking community here.  He briefs us on the hike and makes sure we all sign our name to the hike log to make sure we are accounted for.

Passages through cane grass areas led to the denser coffee plant forest.

Yay, some berries were ripe!  Not the tastiest things but not awful either, full of caffeine.

Old water systems for the farming that used to take place in this area.

Got backed up in some tight spots.

There were so many ripe coffee berries that I started to collect them.

Large agave plant taller than I was.

There were a few caves in the hills, this one ferried water through to the other side and was large enough to duck walk through.

There was guava and lilikoi along the way for snacking.

One of the HTMC vets gave us a heads up on a waterlogged cave next to a small waterfall, we of course had to explore and I sacrificed my dry socks to tiptoe in further.  The tunnel went well inside the hill and without the aid of a headlamp It’d have been a blackout.  Towards the end someone had hung a terrifying surprise, and there was a spooky shrine at the end with a few candles.  I brought a lighter so we lit a few.

This Kalo plant, one of a kind in the area, marks the entrance to the soggy cave.

Attempted to capture the bugs flying in this area.  There were tons of fermenting guava on the ground.

And we’re back, almost 5 miles later.  We head to my favorite West side joint, Coquitos.  Bomb grub awaited.

It’s not much, but I collected a few coffee beans, I will dry them and roast them and see what happens.
