This is my first crossing of the Ko’olaus, and first real trek with my new climbing buddy Kenji. With us are his pals Gary, Chris and Shirley. We immediately were lost amongst the clouds and our original plans for a trek down the Pali Notches were voted out once we found the fork in the ridge. My white whale hike will have to wait. It was a muddy and wet endeavor, the discomfort was pardoned by the joy that climbing up very steep ridges lends. The crew was great, I look forward to more of the same.
Getting to the trailhead early, I was alone to walk along the deserted road and enjoy the sounds of the birds waking up. The faint trickle of a stream broke through the chatter, smells of the wet foliage lingered.
Olomana peaks in the distance.
Finally united with the crew, we trek up to the base of Piliwale ridge.
Soon we were socked in, we continued on wondering if the notches were still going to be part of the plan.
Trying my new spike scenario out, uncomfortable but did a great job with traction.
Kenji leading us through the most technical parts of the trail.
Shirley building her reputation as a competent member of the team.
She gets the Instagram pose, good job!
Kenji being a goofball.
Made it to the top of K1, no dry sock in the crew.
Snacks and a round of two truths and a lie, I don’t think we impressed Shirley…
Gorgeous orchids peppered throughout the trail.
Hiking through the Pauoa flats trail on our way to the upper Manoa lookout and down to the falls.
You can barely make out the Nu’uanu reservoir.
Back to my turf, the upper Moana falls trail, <3
Manoa was particularly fierce today, which makes sense given what we hiked through getting to it.
