Lantern Floating Ceremony, Ala Moana beach park, Oahu

I was told by a friend in passing while at work that there was some lantern ceremony happening at the beach.  I was awestruck when I discovered the grandeur of the event as I read more about it.  Unaware about it’s history, I discovered that this ceremony is held on Memorial Day every year (since 1999), and as quoted on the website…

Lantern Floating Hawaii is a ceremony where all can come together for a personal and collective moment of remembrance, reflection, and offering gratitude to those who have gone before us. (more here)

While I had intended to go and take a few cool pictures, I found myself lost in deep thought as I remembered loved ones I have lost.  It’s beautiful how each culture brings remembrance into the folds (Día de Muertos from Tucson 2014), and I’ll be here next year to send off my own candled boat.

Just as the ceremony began, the sun peaked through the clouds and shined a beam right into the crowd and the incoming boats (to start off the ceremony).

This one really got me.  I couldn’t take a picture for a bit after seeing it.

Judd Trail, Nuuanu Valley, Oahu

After rolling the hell out of my ankle on Kokohead a few days ago, the swelling has gone down and I dearly miss the trails.  I’ve driven by the Judd trail a few times and decided to give it a look see.  Given that it’s a super short little loop this is just what I needed.  Trailhead located here.

Nice cruise down cool and wet roadway just off the Pali highway.  Takin my whip out in these misty mountains is one of my favorite things to do.

Few kids fishing for tilapia at the little watering hole here.

Nice, was able to squeeze my scoots past the trailhead and park it securely within.

This is one of the coolest trees I’ve seen on the island, I’m going to make note of these ancient beasts and put together a list of them one of these days.

The loop starts right after the stream crossing.

This trail had many adolescent Christmas berry trees lending vibrant speckles of red.  It’s taken over entire sections of the trail and is considered very invasive, although it does seem to add a lovely contrast to the larger trees around it.  Berries are poisonous.

Indian shot plant (Canna indica) has some pretty flowers.

Booming music and lots of voices were found lower towards the river.  I discovered a cool little watering hole with a  small jumping spot.

Big daddy Cook pines were prevalent for much of the trail.

Lots of wood fan mushrooms on the dead limbs around.

Everything is moist, dew lingers consistently on the leaves.

Another trail branches off of this one, will have to scope it out someday.  It connects to the upper Manoa falls trail that I absolutely adore.

Had to photograph the deep hues of green from some of these happy little plants.

Koko head hike at night

Tonight was the night I realized that hiking Koko head at night was a thing.  I was nearly certain I was going to be the only one up there at midnight but I must have passed 10 people coming down.  Very peaceful up there, was a great full moon night for visibility, and the sparsely clouded skies made for some great stargazing.

Continuing further, I decided to trek out to the windward side to see the lighthouse and the Moks, waters were rough and there was a high surf which is hard to see.  Peaceful trade winds kept the temperature pleasant and cutting through the wind on my motorcycle alongside the coast at night is something that’s hard to describe.
